Tips for Choosing the Perfect Bridesmaid Dress (and Remaining Friends!)
There are so many unanswered questions when it comes to choosing bridesmaid dresses, we tackle a few of the big issues here for our brides and their maids...
Choosing dresses for your bridesmaids would have to be one of the biggest challenges when planning your big day, and for a number of reasons. One of the main factors is how we got into this business in the first place - lets start with lack of choice in your city. Whilst you're pinning millions of gorgeous dresses that you just LOVE and would look amazing on your girls, where on earth do you find these beauties AND what are the costs like!! Lets start by making Pinterest a reality, and lets do that in our city of Perth - enter Nora & Elle.
We personally found dresses in the bridal shops to be stock standard and way overpriced. On the other hand, there is a million dresses to choose from online and they are SO affordable, but with so many shops and varying degrees of bad reviews, the number one question we ask ourselves? Will I get what I paid for, or will I be posting pictures of my bridesmaid dresses to the famous 'Worst Dress I Ever Bought Online' website, for all the world to have a good laugh at!
And that's where we come in... Nora & Elle has entered the Perth market over 18 months ago now and are making waves in the bridesmaid dress industry with more than 100+ weddings under our belt. We stock gorgeous, quality dresses with a difference, at prices you'll love! Pia Gladys Perey, Jadore and our own line of convertible / multiway dresses - our local boutique owned by two sisters is a MUST visit!
So we all know that planning a wedding can be stressful and there are so many decisions to be made so one thing we like to do as bridesmaids is make the bride feel supported and less stressed, right? Right!
Working in this industry we get to meet so many different bridal parties. Some girls come in as a union with the same line of thinking about what it is they are after, they've discussed ideas on their group chat - they have styles, colours, and even their hairstyles sorted! And others come in light years apart, they find it hard to come together and choose a dress that works for them all, there can be tears and frustration - but don't worry, we have champagne to help with that and who can forget the biggest trend of the season, mismatched bridesmaids gowns for the most unorganised and non-agreeing bridal party (that will still look amazeballs!).
Then we have the bride that knows exactly what she wants without any input from her girls - and that can be OK too but it is important for brides to listen and take on board their girls feelings and sense of style, when they don’t feel comfortable they're not going to have an amazing day and could leave your wedding photos looking just a touch awkward. Maybe there is a small change that can be made to the style or colour that will help your bridesmaid feel at east? Something that still suits the vision of your special day, but makes your bridesmaid feel better about themselves.
And at the same time, bridesmaids need to keep in mind that the bride often does have an important vision, that she has probably been dreaming up since long before she was engaged (we all know you ladies with a secret wedding Pinterest board!). When it’s time to choose dresses try and be as accommodating as possible, work with the other bridesmaids to make this experience a fun memory for you and the bride. You might not feel 100% happy but if your bride has an ear to ear grin and is glowing while she looks at you then she is happy and at times we have to let their happiness be our happiness.
So lets just say the most important thing to do is Discuss, Discuss Discuss... The biggest lesson we have to teach is that a conversation goes a LONG way! Talk about ideas, brainstorm it out and be open and honest with each other - but don't worry girls, you're not alone as we're also here to help with ideas, trends, and suggestions on styles to suit body shapes.
And then it comes time to pay, and the awkward situation arises of wondering who is paying for the dresses!! There are so many options nowadays and everyone has a different idea of what is 'right'... Some brides pay for the dresses and then resell them later, whilst some bridesmaids want to keep and re-wear their dress or there is always the option of 50/50 which helps everyone's budget. Because lets be honest, hosting a wedding is a very expensive day but being a bridesmaid for your bestest girl can also break the bank a little.
So having covered a few of the major things that we see in store, we'll leave you with this... Although wedding planning can be a stressful time for some, it is a magical moment in a girls life and if she has asked you to share that with her then that is a special privilege.
As well as supporting and helping the bride on her big day it’s a bridesmaids job to help the bride sparkle just that little bit more, and sparkle you will in Nora & Elle!
